Blog 2 - What is the relation between culture and globalization? - HUANG YIXIAO

1) Summarize

Tomlinson makes the point that globalization is a multidimensional process, taking place simultaneously within the spheres of the economy, of politics, of technological developments particularly media and communications technologies - of environmental change and of culture. Because of the network of world connections he examined at the time, he could not find a place for global culture in the economic, political, military, social, technological, and environmental explanations of the past. He believes that there is a multidimensional "globalization" in which the cultural dimension is an important area that needs to be studied separately.

In my opinion, culture is people's understanding of that person's daily life, and how they see their particular life. Its spread and diffusion are very complex. As it has been said throughout the book, the strength of a country's economy does not mean that there is a possibility of changing culture.

2) Interesting

According to Tomlinson, in order for any culture to develop, it must assimilate the nourishment of other cultures. In other words, world culture is moving forward in a pattern of pluralism, with each national culture contributing to world civilization. It can even be regarded as the basis of global cultural development. For example, Chinese traditional medicine, calligraphy, and Peking Opera are as much a flag of national culture as poetry, ballet, and oil painting in the West. This flag will not disappear in the process of globalization; it will on the contrary become more distinct and easier to be accepted and understood by other countries and other peoples because of its outstanding contribution. That is to say, he asserts that cultural diffusion relies on excellence and complementarity and that as long as there are scientific criteria of excellence, the superiority of the best cannot be avoided, nor can the acceptance of the best things in the world be avoided. And this is the basis for the development of global culture.

3) Discussion
Global culture is the result of the interdependence and mutual development of various national cultures. So why is there still so much cultural discrimination?
