1st Blog Assignment: "What is globalization?"——LI LINLIN

 (1)Summary

As the author says, globalization is both general and specific. It is not a point or a plane, but a multi-dimensional one. So the scope of globalization is very broad. In addition, countries in the world have different cultural backgrounds and religions, so there is no universally accepted definition of globalization. Just as Confucian culture promotes the concept of "great harmony under heaven", it is too idealized. The implementation process will be hampered by reality. In Velliu's paradigm, globalization can be understood as the direction in which the world as a whole is moving. Globalization doesn't refer to anything.

Many articles and books on globalization define it as having three main dimensions: economic, political and cultural. As mentioned above, globalization is three-dimensional, and the three main dimensions cannot be carried out singly. The McDonaldization of economics is still happening in many brands today. This generalized mode of adaptation also still constitutes a homogeneity. When many companies open stores in different countries or cities, they add city restrictions or local features.

The social dimension, the communicative dimension, etc. have been relatively neglected in the globalization books. With the prevalence of social media and streaming, communication restrictions are much less than they used to be. So the interaction through the Internet is also one of the important dimensions of globalization.

(2)Interesting aspect

The author refers to the integration of nation-states into the process of globalization. In fact, no country today is an absolute nation-state, and even if there are no other minorities, there will always be foreign peoples such as immigrants. But as with globalization, the nation-state is a relative concept. The author also mentions the concept of national identity. Different nationalities have different cultural backgrounds, which also makes the tolerance of different nationalities to foreign civilizations different.

It may be difficult to talk about ethnic integration in this large part of the world. In my home country (China), there are 56 or more different ethnic groups (because some have not yet been identified). Some ethnic minorities with very different cultural backgrounds still live in fixed areas with their own people. And the region has its own autonomy. Even though we live in the same country, it's like two parallel lines.

(3)discussion

Multicultural forms seem to be becoming the global norm. Do multi-ethnic states have a greater role to play in the process of globalization?
