Media Trends and Globalization Classroom question ------JIN SIYU

1、Can you think of examples of cultural globalization that do not originate from Western or Asian cultures?

I want to talk about the custom--circumcision.  This is for women to ensure that they have a chance to get married.  I learned it from a movie called The Desert Flower. If the girls in Africa allow the custom, it can help them to let people know they’re chaste. This custom is well accepted by the locals, but women suffer greatly. With the development of cultural globalization, more and more people learn about this custom through different channels, so that more local women can be liberated.

2、How global is global culture? Is global culture unduly dominated by Western or American culture? Is Asian influence on the global culture growing or receding?

In my mind, global culture lets people worldwide touch different customs and preserve a culture that more people recognize.

I am not sure, but I think film has played a very important role in cultural globalization, for example, the three major film festivals in the West. And films in Hollywood are very famous and the things in them influence many people in different countries. For example, Spider-Man is very popular. Because he has powerful superpowers. At the same time, so many people are influenced by the culture in it.

Yes. I take movies for example. Now, more and more Asian films are also going international. Many Asians have also won Oscars, like Yang Ziqiong. Humans create the films and they have their own ideas to judge which can benefit humans. Everyone has equal freedom of thought in this world because good and valuable ideas deserve everyone's respect and recognition.

3. How could a fusion culture look in 100 years?

As time passes, there will be a fancy culture that fits all the people’s concerns. Maybe the culture will be magnificent, and all the people will be willing to accept it. However, it does not continue for a long time. People then have their own different thoughts to show they’re unique to make their lives better. Above all, culture will always develop with people's current needs.

——Why is my answer better than AI?

I think AI can predict the future but can’t be trusted completely. I need our thoughts to ensure things are truly good for humans.

4. Think of examples in which we are taught as children that our culture is better than other cultures. Is it really true?

Oh, I didn’t have this experience. But my teacher taught me that our culture has a long history and contains all kinds of knowledge like eating, wearing, and sleeping. Especially traditional Chinese medicine. As you can see, In many international competitions, athletes from various countries will mention in interviews that they will choose traditional Chinese medicine, such as acupuncture and cupping. So we have our own pride culture.

5. Yet can cultures be compared? Can we argue that some cultures are indeed better?

As far as I am concerned, cultures can’t be compared. Because different culture adapts different people from different area. Many cultures are developed according to a specific region and are used to help the development of a region. And in the communication,

6. How could we measure cultural globalization?

In my mind, cultural globalization is a great phenomenon to see people willing to communicate.

For language, more and more people speak English, and people discuss on the Internet, they use apps like Facebook, youtube.  And they share their daily life there. People are in the same language environment to find something different and interesting. At the same time, they make friends and learn fantastic knowledge around the world. Maybe that means people are willing to try to push cultural globalization. I think that’s positive.
