What Is Globalization? - HUANG YIXIAO

1) summarize

To characterize globalization are the following. First, globalization consists primarily of two major directional tendencies, increasing global connectivity and increasing global consciousness. Consciousness does not imply consensus, merely a shared sense of the world as a whole. Second, globalization has a particular form, one which has been, to all intents and purposes, consummated by the founding of the United Nations organization. This means that, like the operations of the UN, globalization is focused upon four points of reference: nation-states; world politics; individuals; and humankind. Third, globalization is constituted by four major facets of human life - namely, the cultural, the social, the political, and the economic. These dimensions are in reality heavily intertwined, one or two aspects being more prominent at any given time or place. For example, in the modern world, the cultural and the economic are closely interpenetrative. For these reasons, a number of scholars speak of globalization in the plural, as opposed to a single process of globalization.

In summary, Roland Robertson and Catherine White's conceptualization of globalization emphasizes the compression of time and space, the intensification of global awareness, cultural exchange, economic interdependence, political and social implications, and the role of technology in shaping the modern world. Their perspective recognizes the transformative and interconnected nature of contemporary global processes.

Globalization, as conceptualized by Roland Robertson and Catherine White, is a multifaceted process that involves the compression of the world and the intensification of consciousness of the world as a whole. It encompasses the following key aspects: 1. "Compression of the World" 2. "Intensification of Consciousness" 3. "Cultural Exchange" 4. "Economic Interdependence" 5. "Political and Social Implications" 6. "Technological Advancements".

2) interesting

In political science and international relations, the rapid growth of interest in globalization has led to an increasing questioning of previously central themes such as sovereignty and territory. All agree that globalization has three main dimensions: economic, political, and cultural. McDonaldisation is a form of cultural globalization or a form of cultural imperialismMuch of the discussion of globalization embraces old sociological and anthropological concepts.

3) discussion

Lastly, Roland Robertson and Kathleen E. White also stress the importance of not redefining globalization. Globalization is not a thing, not "it". Globalization has become merely a negative buzzword, a way of being the culprit of every "problem" on the planet - indeed, in the universe. Despite a great deal of rigorous exposition of the theory of globalization in recent years, we unfortunately still see a great deal of such indulgences all around us.

What are some of the side effects of globalization that you know about?

  2. Hello Huang Yi Xiao!
I would like to give you some feedback on your blog post about "What Is Globalization?"
First of all, I noticed that you copied a lot of text from the original source without citing it correctly.

    Here's an example for citation:

"At the centre of our attempt to characterize globalization are the following. First, globalization consists primarily of two major directional tendencies, increasing global connectivity and increasing global consciousness. Consciousness does not imply consensus, merely a shared sense of the world as a whole." (Robertson & White, p.8)
Usually you would also add the publication year but it wasn't provided here.
I can also recommend you the website "Scribbr" to learn more about citations. There's also a free citation generator that helped me a lot for other projects.

Moreover our task was to summarize the content in our own words and not just copy extracts from the text. Maybe you can still improve it until the end of the week!

What I enjoyed most about your blog was that you ended it with a question for us to answer!
"What are some of the side effects of globalization that you know about?"
I would like to look more into a negative side effect of globalization (COVID-19 pandemic).

In my opinion, the "Health" aspect plays a huge role in the current globalization.
Infectious diseases can spread more rapidly compared to the past.
It was demonstrated by the "global" COVID-19 pandemic which first appeared in December, 2019. This was generally caused by increased movement of people (e.g. international travel), goods (e.g. export of contaminated products) and services (e.g. Tourism) across borders.
Furthermore, an inequality in distributing the developed vaccine against the virus arose.
Richer countries have secured larger vaccine supplies for themselves in comparison to poorer ones. That's mostly why various variants occured. Therefore the pandemic continued.
As for me, I believe that global diseases are a big threat to the world and countries should learn from the COVID-19 pandemic to handle it better in the future. Additionally, there shouldn't be an inequality based on the countries development because it is going to result in a negative outcome to "richer" countries as well.

    1. Hello, Vanessa.
Thank you for reading what I wrote and for your feedback.
Firstly, I realize that I have used the original article directly to write this post. Because I gave that ebook a read-through very carefully, I felt that picking out the key points and then using them in a different expression to use, because I am a foreigner, I might be using the wrong meanings of the words. So I chose to write this blog using direct quotes from the original focus.

  3. Hi, Yi Xiao.
First of all, I read what you wrote very well.

To cut to the chase, I've been thinking about the side effects of globalization in economic terms. What comes to mind as a benefit of the economic aspect of globalization is trade and export, but I think there is a side effect from this trade and export.

When it comes to trade and exports, the presence or absence of tariffs is very important.
However, I think that in trade exports, there is unequal economic growth, which is like discrimination, between countries that are members and countries that are not members, that is, countries that have fallen behind in competition with the world due to globalization.

    1. Hello, jiwon.
      Thanks for reading and reviewing!
If my summary helps you that would be great!
As for your answer about tariffs, that's probably why every country wants to be more powerful.

  4. Hello, YI Xiao. I read your writing well.
I think the side effects of globalization are likely to threaten cultural diversity, such as widening the gap between the rich and the poor and religious disputes. If we forget our efforts for cultural diversity, in the long run, inter-state and inter-state links may be destroyed.
