2nd Assignmen Reading: What is the relation between culture and globalization? - Hyojun Kim
1. John Tomlinson's “Culture and Globalization”
John Tomlinson defined "Culture and Globalizatio" as [a complex process of many aspects, including technological advances in economy, politics, especially in media and telecommunications]. This means that the world is becoming more and more connected through things like money, goods, people, knowledge, ideas, and pollution and diseases. Through culture and globalization, we are influencing what we consume, what we see in the media, and what we hear."
Concerned, he said globalization could lead to a single global culture due to increased global connectivity in the economic sector. Not everything about globalization is directed towards one culture, but it is a process to a more unified world, and there are concerns about Western culture, especially movies, music, and fast food, dominating other countries' cultures.
It was also argued that modern globalization is important for everyone to understand and respect different lifestyles without forcing one culture on another.
2. Example of "Cure and Globalization"
Culture is a legacy and history passed down in each country. Through this culture, various people around the world become one. In Korea, K-POP can be used as an example. With the globalization of Korean fandom, BTS was able to top the Billboard list. In addition, we can feel the Korean culture that is becoming global by showing the fandom around the world.
3. Realization
As John Tomlinson said, culture can be experienced and felt by many people and have various perspectives. In addition, I believe that more mature "Culture and Globalization" is achieved while respecting and understanding each country's culture. Through this, I am also curious about what positive changes can be made in the future as more people sympathize and become a topic of conversation between people.
