[2nd Assignment] What is the relation between culture and globalization? – CHENG SHIYI

 1)     Summary

This paper discusses the close relationship between globalization and culture in terms of their mutual influence and inseparability, from the perspectives of the process and impact of globalization, as well as the historical background of globalization and the development of network communication technologies. First, the author argues that globalization is a multifaceted, complex, accelerating, and integrative process of global connectivity, and that this growing connectivity largely defines our daily lives. The authors point out that culture is an intrinsic part of globalization and an aspect of its emergence and formation.

The author argues that globalization does not mean that the world is becoming economically and politically "unified" in the broadest sense. The connectivity of globalization has brought distinct cultures into closer contact, allowing cultural elements to flow freely and interpenetrate, a phenomenon that has shaped the distinctive features of global culture. One of the key concepts is the global values of culture. The author argues against the view that globalization has pushed us towards an all-encompassing "global culture", and against the view that Western culture is effortlessly presented as global.

Secondly, the author discusses how globalization has changed the production, dissemination and reception of cultural goods. On the one hand, globalization has led to the success of various cultural products in the global market, and on the other hand it has led to the commercialization of cultural products, which raises concerns about the quality and diversity of cultural products.

Another important point made by the author is cultural identity and cultural critique. Cultural globalization offers both opportunities and challenges. People can have easier access to different cultures globally, but this can also lead to confusion and uneasiness about cultural identity. The author emphasizes critical thinking and analysis of cultural phenomena to better understand the cultural changes brought about by globalization.

In conclusion, this paper explores the interdependence and impact of globalization and culture, which requires us to pay more attention to the phenomenon of globalization of culture and to think critically about it.

2)    Interesting Point

The authors argue against confusing purely cultural commodities with cultural practices themselves - cultural practices involve the interpretation and appropriation of the meanings of these commodities. Eating McDonald's burgers, smoking Marlboro cigarettes, drinking Coke and playing computer games do not in themselves provide much hard evidence of surrender to deeper Western cultural values. This suggests that the globalization of culture is not a form of totalitarianism and that Western culture is not the same as global culture.

3) Discussion

1. As globalization distributes the institutional features of modernity across all cultures, it produces institutionalized forms of cultural belonging. How should we as individuals and nations maintain our cultural identities as we participate in the global economy and culture under the growing impact of globalization?

2. Give examples of how human rights can be used to defend cultural differences, just as they can be used to assert universal standards of justice.
