Blog Assignment 3: "What is the relation between politics and globalization?" - Hyojun Kim
1. Summary
This article underscores the dual nature of political globalization, highlighting it’s potential for fostering global democracy, human rights, and social justice, alongside the risk of exacerbating inequality, conflict, and environmental degradation. The evolving global landscape challenges traditional nation-state-centric models through the emergence of polycentric governance networks and the establishment of a global normative culture.
The text emphasizes the interconnected dimensions of political globalization, including the transcending of national boundaries with the global spread of democratic governance. It also addresses the rise of a global normative culture influencing political behavior across nations and the emergence of non-territorial polycentric networks like global civil society.
The article underscores the complex web of political globalization, emphasizing the transformation of the public sphere and the evolution of a global public sphere focused on transnational discourse, particularly on issues like human rights and the environment. Global civil society is highlighted as a bottom-up force challenging national political hegemony and contributing to the development of new global political forms.
Finally, the text explores the evolving concept of space and borders, liberated from traditional national paradigms, impacting both global and internal state dynamics. In essence, it portrays the intricate dynamics of politics in the age of globalization, fueling ongoing debates on defining and shaping political globalization to align with the evolving global political landscape.
2. Interesting point
It was interesting that the growth of global civil society interacts with domestic and international politics. This emphasizes that non-governmental organizations and social movements can influence global politics and form a new form of governance. However, there is still a limitation in that global civil society cannot be independent as a global civil society, democracy, and national structure. Therefore, it is positive that members and new communities will be created in areas of interest, but I think it is not good to call them to domestic and foreign politics.
