Reading Assignment 3: “What is the relation between politics and globalization?" by Han Jiseung

Summary

There is no doubt that the most common form of political globalization is the worldwide spread of democracy based on the parliamentary nation-state. About 100 years ago, there was a traditional dynasty on the Korean Peninsula, but the present Republic of Korea was reorganized on the basis of democracy. This was in accordance with the 'new world order'. It was able to completely change Korea's political system, which has lasted thousands of years since the birth of civilization, because the world changed quickly and led to faster communication.  Changes in nationality and citizenship, changes in public domain and political communication, changes in civil society, and changes in the concept of space and borders are cited in this article.

For this reason, the idea that the importance of the 'state' is decreasing on the world stage is prevalent, and the state still plays a big role, the article says. In particular, I mention that European integration has been of great help to countries, citing the case of Europe.

These days, we talk and discuss not only what is happening in Korea (as Koreans) but also what is happening in faraway countries across the continent. The 'world norm culture' being driven by people's global civil society is making us evaluate what is right and wrong in a global context.

In the end, the connection or relationship between politics and globalization mentioned in this article may have had a good effect, but it also created several dilemmas. Political globalization is shifting its focus from traditional conflicts to issues of humanity on a more global scale.

Interesting point

Reading about the case of Europe, especially the consequences of Europeanization, I thought this might harm several small countries in the name of 'One Europe', but I got a new perspective that it might not.

Discussion

The pace of change between countries, regions, and civilizations is different. This is a natural thing. In this article, I mainly cited European examples, and I wondered how I could see the examples of various countries around the world, including Korea, Far East Asia, Southeast Asia, Near East Asia, Africa, and South America. etc. Wouldn't the relationship between politics and globalization be used differently from the standpoint of accepting the wave of globalization?
