Blog Assignment 3: What is the relation between politics and globalization? - MENGRU LI

Summary

The article explores multiple aspects of globalization, which are interrelated and primarily focus on political globalization. The author particularly emphasizes the awareness of post national and transnational processes, as well as the compression of space and time. In the context of political globalization, the influence of global forces on nation states has led to the development of different political and transnational networks, as well as the phenomenon of de localization and re localization. During this process, global political culture has caused a certain degree of stagnation for nation states, as the division of the social world has led to the loss of political autonomy. The organization and geographical configuration of global companies exhibit complex and coordinated needs under the influence of historical, cultural, and industry environmental differences. Despite global trends, increasing evidence suggests that multinational corporation networks exhibit strong regional characteristics in Europe, North America, and East Asia.

Political globalization encompasses aspects such as global geopolitics, global normative culture, and multi center networks, forming a complex global political field. In this field, democratic values spread globally, while global normative culture involves human rights and environmental issues. A multi center network reflects a new form of global governance with relatively few relationships with countries. Overall, the article emphasizes the complexity of the interrelationships between these three aspects, which together constitute the dynamic and complex network of global politics.

In summary, the article raises three core issues: the universalization of national democratic models, the rise of global normative culture, and the "civil socialization" of government structures. There is a complex and sometimes contradictory relationship between these three processes. Finally, the article emphasizes three dilemmas arising from these complex relationships, as well as the significance of the tense relationship between autonomy and division. These dilemmas involve democratic yearning and criticism, the possibility of a global normative culture and a new global collective, as well as the opportunities and instability of multicenter networks. These new tensions are leading global politics towards broader issues such as governance, identity, mobility, and community, marking a new era of political globalization.

Interesting point

When discussing the importance of global civil society in contemporary political globalization ideas, the author takes the example of Mary Robinson, former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, who said in 2003, "There are still two superpowers left on this planet: the United States and global civil society," presenting the fact that civil society may organize to resist capitalism and/or the global hegemony of the United States. And the socialization of citizens has penetrated into international relations, which is a very interesting relationship.

Discussion

According to Susan Strange (1996), countries have been usurped by the global market. So has globalization indeed weakened the power of nations? Or is it simply a repositioning of a country's role in a more globalized world?
