Blog Assignment 4: What is the relation between economy and globalization? - Kim Soongki

 Summary

Economic globalization is a complex phenomenon that is shaped by a variety of factors, including the role of transnational corporations (TNCs). Dicken argues that TNCs are highly differentiated and embedded within specific geographical contexts. One of the key factors that shapes the geographical distribution of TNCs is cultural differences. Despite the unquestioned geographical transformations of the world economy, driven at least in part by the expansionary activities of TNCs, we are not witnessing the convergence of business-organizational forms towards a single ‘placeless’ type.

TNCs are not a homogeneous population. They come in a whole variety of shapes and sizes, and there remain significant differences between TNCs from different countries of origin. TNCs are not free-standing, clearly bounded, independent entities. Instead, they are constituted as, and embedded within, highly complex and dynamic ‘webs of enterprise’ manifested in transnational production networks. The power relationships between TNCs and other actors in the global economy are complex and dynamic. TNCs are undoubtedly powerful, but they do not possess absolute power. They may be constrained in their freedom of action, as recent events have demonstrated.

In conclusion, TNCs are a highly differentiated and embedded population that plays a significant role in shaping the global economy. However, they are not a homogeneous population, and there remain significant differences between TNCs from different countries of origin. The power relationships between TNCs and other actors in the global economy are complex and dynamic, and TNCs may be constrained in their freedom of action.

Interesting point

One interesting thing I learned from this reading is that despite the expansionary activities of TNCs, we are not witnessing the convergence of business-organizational forms towards a single 'placeless' type. This is because societies tend to develop distinctive ways of organizing their economies, even within the broad ideology of capitalism. Not all capitalisms are the same, and capitalism comes in many different varieties.

Another interesting point from the reading is the concept of "webs of enterprise" manifested in transnational production networks. This highlights the idea that transnational corporations are not independent entities, but rather embedded within complex and dynamic networks shaped by various factors such as geographical distribution of resources, skilled labor, and supportive institutions. This emphasizes the interconnected and interdependent nature of global economic activities.

Discussion point

What is the relation between economy and globalization?

The economy and globalization are intricately linked through the activities of transnational corporations (TNCs), which play a central role in the global economy. TNCs are differentiated and embedded within specific geographical contexts, reflecting the diversity of global capitalism. The interconnectedness of TNCs through transnational production networks creates a dynamic relationship between the economy and globalization, influenced by factors such as cultural differences, regional production networks, and power dynamics between TNCs and other actors in the global economy.

The reading provides a nuanced depiction of the role of transnational corporations (TNCs) in economic globalization, emphasizing their differentiated and embedded nature within specific geographical contexts. It highlights the complexity of TNCs and their interactions with various actors in the global economy, challenging the notion of a uniform, placeless corporate influence.

Discussion Point:

The concept of "webs of enterprise" in transnational production networks emphasizes the interconnected and dynamic nature of TNCs. How do these complex networks impact local economies and communities within different geographical regions?
