Reading Assignment 2:What is the relation between culture and globalization? (ZHANG BINGYI)

 1) Summarize the materials:

Cultural globalization is an important part of globalization. It not only reflects the spread and integration of culture but also affects the construction of social relations. Globalization is a multidimensional process covering economic, political, technological, environmental, and cultural fields. The economy is usually considered to be the core of globalization, but understanding globalization solely through economic drivers is incomplete. Culture is not only the background to globalization but also its driving force. By communicating meaning and value, culture influences the choices of individuals and groups and has a profound impact on globalization. Cultural globalization is reflected in communication channels such as the Internet, mass media, and international travel, making cross-border cultural interactions possible while forming common norms and knowledge that help build individual and collective identities.

2) Interesting things learned:

Culture is not only a passive "recipient" in globalization but also an active "driving force." For example, young people's shopping behavior is not only an economic behavior but also a part of cultural self-expression.

Research on cultural globalization involves multidisciplinary fields such as anthropology, sociology, and international relations, showing its complexity and diversity.

As a response to the criticism of cultural imperialism in the 1970s and 1980s, this concept emphasized the two-way rather than one-way nature of cultural exchanges, subverting the traditional perspective of power centers and peripherals.

3) Questions and discussion angles:

Question: In the process of globalization, is the two-way communication of culture balanced enough, or is it still dominated by strong culture (such as Western culture)?

It is worth exploring whether some cultures have become dominant through globalization, while the diversity of other cultures has been diminished or homogenized.

Focus: How to balance cultural diversity and cultural unity in globalization?

How to protect and respect local cultural traditions while sharing cultural values globally is a major challenge.

Discussion perspective: Is the role of culture in globalization sufficiently valued?

Many may be tempted to reduce globalization to an economic process, but the spread and influence of culture require more attention, such as the critical role of culture in shaping global norms and identities.
